The Swedish government has recently proposed a memorandum as an amendment to the current Gambling Act. The main aim of it is to strengthen the control of unlicensed platforms and cover the so-called “grey zones”— iGaming sites that aren’t licensed by law yet are available to Swedish users.

In case the amendment is accepted, it will come into force on January 1st, 2027. Main changes include the new criteria to define if the site operates under the Swedish law: it wouldn’t matter if the site advertises services for the Swiss, is translated into Swedish, or uses its currency; the main criterion is that the Swiss can participate. The operators would also have to block the access to Swedish users if they aren’t under the law of the country.

Nevertheless, the law doesn’t guarantee the solution to all problems. Some industry experts believe that even new measures won’t stop unlicensed platforms from being attractive to users due to their bonuses, game variations, fast payouts, and other pros that can’t be provided by Swedish operators.
