Alberta is set to become the second province in Canada to have a regulated iGaming market after Bill 48 — the iGaming Alberta Act was passed. Expected to launch in early 2026, the law will allow private online gambling operators to enter a regulated space, beyond the current state run-platform, PlayAlberta.
Currently, PlayAlberta is the only legal online gambling site in the province but it has less than 50% of the market share, many residents are using offshore or “grey market” sites. The new law will bring these operators into a regulated system, to protect consumers and generate more provincial revenue.
Alberta iGaming Regulation Highlights
- Launch: Early 2026, private operators will enter a regulated space.
- Regulator: The new Alberta iGaming Corporation will manage contracts and commercial partnerships.
- Tax Revenue: $50-100 million in annual tax income.
- Responsible Gambling: A central self-exclusion system will be implemented to address existing regulatory gaps.
- Industry Interest: FanDuel and other major operators are reportedly interested in the new market.
The AGLC will still regulate the market but commercial partnerships will be managed by the new Crown entity. The framework is similar to the Ontario iGaming Model, for transparency and consumer protection.
