The Govt has filed a petition in the Supreme Court to cluster multiple petitions against the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 which are pending in different High Courts. The move is to streamline the process and avoid conflicting judgments.
The matter will come up for hearing on 8th September 2025. In the petition, the Centre has also sought a stay on all ongoing High Court proceedings till the transfer is done.
What the Law Says
The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 was passed in the monsoon session and got Presidential assent on 22nd August. It brings in sweeping changes across the country:
- Nationwide ban on real-money online games including fantasy sports, regardless of skill or chance classification
- Central authority to regulate esports and casual gaming
- Ban on advertising and promotion of restricted games
- Criminal penalties for violations
Three petitions have been filed against the law in:
- Karnataka High Court by Head Digital Works Pvt Ltd
- Delhi High Court by Bagheera Carrom (OPC) Pvt Ltd
- Madhya Pradesh High Court by Clubboom11 Sports & Entertainment Pvt Ltd
The Centre has argued that consolidation under the Supreme Court will ensure uniform interpretation of the law across all states.
