Nepal has ordered internet providers to block all online gambling platforms, giving operators 24 hours to comply. The move effectively wipes out access to betting apps and websites across the country.
The directive was issued by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology and enforced through the Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), which coordinated with ISPs to restrict access nationwide.
The decision comes days after Balendra Shah took office and launched a broader policy reform agenda focused on tighter control over digital activity.
What the Ban Includes
- all betting apps and gambling websites
- both mobile and desktop access
- any form of electronic or online wagering
- enforcement via telecom operators and ISPs
- immediate implementation within 24 hours
Nepal already has a blanket ban on gambling under existing law, but enforcement has been inconsistent. Authorities say online betting has continued to grow, particularly among younger users, prompting stricter action.
The government has also warned of penalties for anyone using or operating unauthorized gambling platforms, reinforcing a zero-tolerance approach.
