New Zealand’s Department of International Affairs (DIA) urged 20bet, an online betting platform, to stop advertising their services in the country. According to the department’s data, the Cyprus-based company placed paid YouTube ads that targeted users from New Zealand and promoted online slots and betting.
The country’s law prohibits foreign iGaming services advertising in New Zealand. Legal betting is allowed only via national operator TAB.
20bet used a provocative phrase “taking risks is something that Kiwis like doing” in the advertising, according to DIA, that was specifically noted by the regulator.
Vicki Scott, iGaming director of DIA, noted that they will continue to monitor the situation and apply additional measures if necessary. Representatives of the Problem Gambling Foundation supported the decision and highlighted that foreign operators tend to ignore the advertising law. They hope to eliminate all the illegal ads in the future.
