Britain’s Gambling Commission has accused Meta Platforms of failing to prevent unlicensed gambling operators from advertising to UK users on Facebook and Instagram. The regulator says Meta is allowing these operators to place ads on its platforms and is accepting payments from them without carrying out sufficient checks to ensure they are legally permitted to target British consumers.

Speaking at the ICE gaming conference in Barcelona, the Commission’s executive director of research and policy, Tim Miller, rejected Meta’s claim that it only becomes aware of illegal gambling ads after they are reported. He pointed to Meta’s publicly available ad library, which shows multiple advertisers promoting gambling websites that are not registered with GamStop, the UK’s national self-exclusion scheme.

Miller said the regulator can identify such ads using simple keyword searches, and questioned why a company with Meta’s technological resources cannot do the same proactively. He described the situation as evidence that illegal activity is taking place in plain sight and warned that it poses serious risks to consumers.

The criticism comes at a time when Meta is reorganising its senior leadership, following the appointment of Dina Powell McCormick as President and Vice Chairman on January 12, 2026.
