Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince reckons that by 2027, AI bot traffic could outstrip human traffic on the internet — a pretty eye-opening statement he made during his SXSW talk back in 2026.
The core reason is how AI agents behave online. A regular user might visit a few websites before making a decision. An AI agent, doing the same task, can go through thousands of pages — creating significantly more requests and load on the internet.
What’s Changing
We’re living through a major shift:
- Traffic just keeps on growing
- But, and this is the thing, the traffic that’s driving it is increasingly not human
- And the thing is, it doesn’t convert anywhere near as well as it used to
In simple terms, just having a ton of traffic doesn’t mean a thing anymore, it’s not going to bring in the cash.
What it Means for Affiliate Marketers
This shift is going to hit affiliates hard:
- Search traffic starts to become super unreliable: With AI answers cropping up everywhere, people are less likely to bother clicking on websites.
- Metrics become totally distorted: You’ll see more impressions and visit, but it’s all just AI bots, not real users.
- Real traffic becomes more expensive than ever: With the competition shifting from volume to quality, it’s the high-quality stuff that starts to get more expensive.
What to Focus On Now
- prioritize sources with real users
- rely less on SEO-only strategies
- use traffic formats where user intent is clearer (push, pops, native)
- pay more attention to filtering and optimization
