OpenAI has announced that it will begin testing advertisements inside ChatGPT in the United States in the coming weeks, marking a significant step toward introducing advertising within the widely used AI chatbot. The test will target users of the free plan and the newly expanded ChatGPT Go plan.

The company says ads will be clearly labeled, separated from ChatGPT’s core responses, and shown only when a relevant sponsored product or service aligns with a user’s conversation. OpenAI emphasizes that ads will not influence how ChatGPT generates its answers, and that user data will not be shared directly with advertisers.

What’s New

According to OpenAI’s official statement, the test will be limited to logged-in adult users in the US on ChatGPT’s free and Go subscriptions. Paid plans such as Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise will remain ad-free for now.

Ads are expected to appear at the bottom of responses, only when there’s a clear connection between the conversation topic and a sponsored product or service. Users will be able to dismiss ads and provide feedback on why they don’t want to see them. Importantly, OpenAI says ads will not be shown to users under 18 or in conversations involving sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics.

Why It Matters

ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used AI tools in the world, with hundreds of millions of weekly users. Introducing ads could signal a shift in how AI services are monetized beyond traditional subscription fees.

By placing ads clearly outside of ChatGPT’s core responses and giving users control over personalization, the company aims to avoid the kinds of intrusive ad experiences seen on social platforms. However, critics say any introduction of ads could test user loyalty if not handled carefully.

What’s Next

OpenAI will monitor user feedback and ad performance during the test period before making any decisions about expanding or adjusting the ad experience. If successful, this trial can become a broader ad model that coexists with ChatGPT’s subscription services while keeping its core responses independent and user-focused.
