OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman has raised the possibility of introducing advertising in ChatGPT, though he emphasized that trust and user alignment would be top priorities. In a recent interview on YouTube channel “Conversations with Tyler” Altman discussed how OpenAI can monetize ChatGPT without compromising the quality of its answers.
What Altman Said About Ads on ChatGPT
According to Altman, ChatGPT will not become a platform for the kind of ads that would “put a worse hotel above a better hotel” simply for higher ad revenue. Instead, he considers a transaction-fee model, where ChatGPT could take a small cut from bookings or purchases but wouldn’t let payments influence its recommendations.
He explained that while ads are “not totally off the table,” they would need to be handled in a way that preserves trust.
“If ChatGPT were accepting payment to put a worse hotel above a better hotel, that’s probably catastrophic for your relationship with ChatGPT”, – says Altman.
Why It Matters
If Open AI implements monetization, it would let ChatGPT earn only when it genuinely helps users with useful recommendations. Since many people consider ChatGPT to be a trusted digital assistant, the company will try to avoid ad formats that could damage that relationship.
While ads might be one of the ways to get profit, Altman noted they’re not OpenAI’s “biggest revenue opportunity.”
No ad feature has been built yet, and Altman admitted he doesn’t know exactly what it might look like – a sidebar, footer, or another format entirely. For now, OpenAI seems to be exploring a careful, user-aligned monetization strategy rather than a traditional ad-driven business model.
