The prosecutor’s office of the Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil has recently sued 43 online betting companies, including well-known operators like Bet365, Betano and Betfair.
The authorities demand the companies to pay about $54 million for violating the rules of promoting responsible gambling.
According to the prosecutor’s office, these companies did not provide iGaming players with sufficient tools for self-control, such as betting limits, automated warnings, or the playing time limits. In addition, their advertising with the “play responsibly” phrase is considered misleading.
If the claim is satisfied, the money will be directed to programs to help players with addiction. In response to the accusations, the ANJL association, representing bookmakers, said it disagreed with the claims and would defend the industry in court.
