In 2025 South Korean authorities paid out more than 600 million won (roughly $415,000) in rewards to citizens who reported illegal gambling activity, the government says.

The scheme — part of an effort to crack down on unlicensed operators and those who promote underground gambling platforms — handed out dozens of tips-based payouts during the year.

One tipster alone received about 115.7 million won (approximately $80,000), nearly one-fifth of the total sum disbursed. Under current law, any citizen who provides actionable information about illegal operators, participants in unlawful betting, or promoters of such platforms can be awarded up to 200 million won.

South Korean law treats organisers of illicit gambling harshly: those convicted can face up to seven years in prison and substantial fines. Participants also risk serious penalties, including prison sentences of up to five years and monetary sanctions.

Authorities say the reward program is intended to encourage public cooperation and help dismantle networks that facilitate illegal wagering.
