When someone asks ChatGPT for the best casino, VPN or dating app, the answer names a few brands and links to a few pages. Those links are AI citations, and they show which sources an AI model trusts when it chooses what to recommend. This article breaks down AI source citations in four verticals (online casinos, crypto platforms, dating apps and VPNs) and shows how AI search engines choose sources and brands across AI platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

This article was prepared by the AffRoom team in collaboration with SupaIntent and is based on its data. SupaIntent is an AI visibility platform that tracks which brands the major AI assistants (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity AI and Google) recommend and shows the sources behind each answer. The figures below come from a dataset of 144 answers collected on 20 September 2026, and we added the analysis for affiliates and iGaming brands.

What Are AI Citations and How AI Search Engines Cite Sources

An AI citation is a link to a source shown inside an AI answer. A mention is different: it is a brand named in the text of the answer. A brand mentioned in an answer may have no link next to it, and a page can be cited without any brand name in the text, so mentions and citations need to be tracked separately. Behind AI search results stands a set of pages the engine read to build its reply, and the cited links are the visible trace of that process.

For publishers and affiliates the difference matters. Citations show which pages feed the answer, and mentions show who gets the recommendation. A citation is also not a ranking in a search engine: a page can rank high in Google Search and never be cited, and the reverse. Traditional search results from search engines like Google reward one set of signals, while AI answers lean on another, so SEO alone does not guarantee a place in the answer. This study covers AI Mode in Google, which is separate from Google AI Overviews. For the basics of how Google’s AI builds these answers, see our guide to Google AI Search Overview.

How AI Source Selection Works Across AI Platforms

Each generative AI platform builds an answer in its own way, but the basic logic is similar. The system reads the prompt, pulls pages that match it and picks a few to link as proof. AI models are trained on huge text collections, yet answers with links rely on pages fetched at the moment of the question, not on AI training alone. Large language models are good at summarizing, so the pages that win are the ones where AI can extract a clear answer easily: a ranked list, a comparison table or a short verdict. A roundup gives the engine a ready-made structure, which helps explain why this format dominates the data below.

Every platform has its own source preferences, so a brand needs to understand how AI uses sources in each case. Different AI models favor different kinds of pages: some lean on media and review sites, others on brand pages or community threads. The sections below show which sources AI systems pick in each vertical and for each engine, with numbers.

About the Data Behind This AI Visibility Study

In each vertical, SupaIntent ran a fixed set of category prompts and recorded every link shown and every brand named.

AI Source Citations: How AI Engines Choose Brands in 2026

The four verticals produced 661 citations that point to 419 unique pages on 274 sites.

VerticalCitationsUnique pagesSitesTop 10 sites’ shareTop site
Crypto1951177744.1%coinbureau.com (21)
Casino1411066846.1%rotowire.com (20)
Dating1771188041.8%mashable.com (13)
VPN148784956.1%cnet.com (17)

Six findings stand out:

  1. The long tail is huge. 160 of 274 site entries (58.4%) were cited only once, and the top 10 sites take an outsized citation share: 42–56% in each vertical.
  2. Engines rarely agree. 238 of 274 site entries (86.9%) were cited by only one engine. Only two sites were cited by all three: rotowire.com in casino and forbes.com in dating.
  3. ChatGPT cites the most. It produced 348 of 661 citations (52.6%), or about 7.3 per answer, against 3.4 for Gemini and 3.1 for Google.
  4. Roundups win. Pages with “best”, “top” or “ranked” in the title take 43.7% of all citations, and 54.8% of cited titles include 2025 or 2026.
  5. Reddit and YouTube are niche sources. They got 20 and 6 citations, or 3.0% and 0.9% of the total. Google produced 17 of the 20 Reddit citations and all 6 YouTube ones, while ChatGPT cited neither.
  6. Brand sites matter by vertical. Pages on the top-20 brands’ own sites took 28.2% of crypto citations and 23.0% of VPN citations, but 14.7% in dating and only 1.4% (2 of 141) in casino.

Citation Patterns by Vertical: Casino, Crypto, Dating and VPN

AI citation patterns across the four verticals look very different, so each vertical gets a short profile below.

Casino: Sports Media and Reviewers Lead

The casino answers lean on sports and gambling media. rotowire.com alone took 20 of 141 citations (14.2%) from 13 unique pages, and it appeared in 18 of 36 answers. Google drove most of it: 12 of its 27 casino citations went to RotoWire. The other leading sites are playusa.com, sportsline.com, actionnetwork.com and lines.com, and the most cited single pages are “best online casinos” lists from lines.com and pokerstrategy.com (5 each).

A casino brand gets very few direct citations: only 2 pages on the top-20 casino brands’ own sites were cited, so the recommendation is shaped by third-party mentions. If you run a review site, this is your opening: see our guide on gambling and casino SEO.

Crypto: ChatGPT Reads Brand and Specialist Sites

Crypto is the most ChatGPT-heavy vertical: 128 of 195 citations (65.6%). coinbureau.com leads with 21 citations (19 from ChatGPT), and kraken.com follows with 15. Google prefers finance publishers: 9 of its 33 citations go to NerdWallet and 8 to Investopedia, each from a single “best crypto exchanges” page. Brand sites are strong here: 55 citations, 53 of them from ChatGPT.

Dating: Media Plus Community

Dating has the broadest mix of sources, with 80 sites and a lot of user-generated content (UGC). mashable.com leads (13 citations in 13 answers), followed by reddit.com (10 citations from 8 unique pages), forbes.com (9) and grass.camp (9). Sites that SupaIntent classifies as social, forum or community platforms take 28.8% of citations, the highest of the four verticals. For the affiliate side of this vertical, see dating affiliate programs.

VPN: One Page Does a Lot of Work

The VPN vertical is the most concentrated: the top 10 sites take 56.1% of citations. One cnet.com page about the best VPN service was cited 17 times, in 17 of 36 answers, by Gemini (10) and Google (7) and never by ChatGPT. ChatGPT preferred rtings.com (10 citations) and the brand site protonvpn.com (7). Community threads show up again, with 8 citations, 7 of them from Google.

Reddit and YouTube in AI Search

Reddit threads and YouTube videos are cited far less than media roundups, but they are not absent. In dating, Reddit took 10 citations, and Google produced 9 of them while ChatGPT produced none. In VPN, 7 of the 8 Reddit citations came from Google too. Across all four verticals, Reddit got 3.0% of citations and YouTube 0.9%.

How Each AI Model Chooses Sources: ChatGPT, Gemini and Google

EngineCitationsSharePer answerTitles with “best”, “top” or “ranked”Pattern
ChatGPT34852.6%7.324.7%Many citations, specialist and brand pages, no forum or video sites
Gemini16525.0%3.474.5%Roundup pages from media and review sites
Google14822.4%3.154.1%Heavy on media, Reddit and YouTube

The takeaway is practical: a page that ChatGPT cites is usually not the page Gemini cites, so no single AI tool or tactic covers all three. The same applies to Google’s update cycle in iGaming SEO, where winners shift fast.

Which Brands the Engines Recommend

SupaIntent also counted how many of the 36 answers named each brand. A brand mentioned across many answers is not always a brand that gets links, and the brands that appear in AI answers differ by vertical.

Vertical#1#2#3
CryptoKraken, 32 answers (88.9%)Coinbase, 31 (86.1%)MetaMask, 24 (66.7%)
CasinoDraftKings Casino, 28 (77.8%)BetMGM Casino, 27 (75.0%)FanDuel Casino, 27 (75.0%)
DatingHinge, 30 (83.3%)Bumble, 30 (83.3%)Tinder, 28 (77.8%)
VPNProton VPN, 35 (97.2%)Mullvad VPN, 30 (83.3%)NordVPN, 29 (80.6%)

Two patterns repeat. First, the field is narrow: in casino the top five brands appear in 58–78% of answers, and the sixth drops to 33%, so the shortlist is short. Second, a brand can win without its own site being cited. DraftKings Casino is named in 28 answers while its own site was cited once, and the answers are shaped by pages like RotoWire’s. Kraken and Proton VPN do both: they lead the mentions and their own sites are among the most cited.

Authority Signals That AI Trusts When It Recommends Brands

The pages that get linked share a few traits, and these work as authority signals that AI engines seem to trust. The first is format: roundups with “best”, “top” or “ranked” in the title take 43.7% of citations. The second is freshness: 54.8% of cited titles include 2025 or 2026. The third is the type of site: review and media sites lead overall, so independent sources carry more weight than a brand’s own claims, and multiple independent sources that name the same brand make the strongest case. Signals like these are easy to read, and AI needs a page it can trust and summarize quickly. They are patterns in the data, not proof of cause, but they point to what shapes a page’s citation probability.

How to Check Citations Across AI Platforms

You can check whether AI products link to your website in two ways.

Manually. Write 10–12 category prompts that match how your buyers ask: recommendations, comparisons, alternatives and risks. Run each in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, and log every link and every brand named. Repeat monthly to track citation behavior over time, because AI responses change.

With a tool. AI tools and platforms like SupaIntent run the prompts on a schedule, track brand mentions, compare you with competitors and list the sites that shape each answer. This is the shortcut when you need a stable AI citations report across several engines.

Either way, record four things: which prompts name your brand, which pages are cited, which competitors share the answer and which engine each citation comes from. These four points of citation data are the base of any AI visibility strategy.

How a Brand Can Get Cited in AI Answers: SEO for AI Visibility

The data points to five steps to earn AI citations and get cited by AI engines in your vertical.

  1. Find the pages already cited. Look at the top sites in your vertical and see which “best of” pages feature competitors but not you.
  2. Get onto roundups and reviews. They take 43.7% of citations, and the cited ones are mostly dated 2025 or 2026, so refresh them. Affiliates and publishers who run honest reviews are part of this chain.
  3. Plan by engine. Gemini leans on roundups, ChatGPT on specialist and brand pages, and Google adds Reddit and YouTube. Check where AI goes for sources in your niche before you plan.
  4. Fix your own pages where they count. Brand sites earn a large share of citations in crypto and VPN, so their citation rate is worth tracking; in casino it is almost zero, so third-party coverage matters more. Add structured data and clear headings, and make sure you are not blocking AI crawlers or other AI bots by mistake.
  5. Track and repeat. With a snapshot of 36 answers per vertical, one month is a signal, not a trend.

Limits of the Data

This is one snapshot of 144 answers: 12 prompts in each vertical and 3 engines. Engines change their sources often, and a source cited once may disappear next week. The brand lists are specific to each vertical and prompt set. Use the findings to form hypotheses and test them on your own prompts.

FAQ

What are AI citations?

AI citations are links to sources shown inside answers from engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Google. They show which pages the engine used or trusted to build the answer. A brand mention is a separate metric: it counts when the brand is named in the text.

Which sources do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google cite most?

In SupaIntent’s 144 answers, the most cited sites were coinbureau.com (21 citations) in crypto, rotowire.com (20) in casino, mashable.com (13) in dating and cnet.com (17) in VPN. Review and media sites lead overall, and the biggest single source differs by vertical.

Do ChatGPT, Gemini and Google cite the same sources?

Mostly not. 238 of 274 site entries (86.9%) were cited by only one engine, and only rotowire.com (casino) and forbes.com (dating) were cited by all three. ChatGPT also cited far more sources per answer (about 7.3) than Gemini (3.4) or Google (3.1).

What types of sources do AI systems cite when recommending brands?

Mainly media and review roundups: pages with “best”, “top” or “ranked” in the title take 43.7% of citations. Brand sites matter in crypto (28.2% of citations) and VPN (23.0%), but hardly in casino (1.4%). Reddit and YouTube are rare overall (3.0% and 0.9%) but show up in Google answers for dating and VPN.

How do you check which engines cite your website?

Run a fixed set of 10–12 category prompts in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google, and log every cited URL and brand. Repeat monthly. To do this at scale, use an AI visibility platform such as SupaIntent, which tracks mentions, competitors and the sites behind each answer.

How can a brand get cited in AI answers?

Get featured on the roundup and review pages that engines already cite, keep them fresh, and cover each engine’s preferred source types. Improve your own pages where brand sites get cited, such as crypto and VPN, and track your results prompt by prompt.

What do you want AI to cite: your own site or third-party pages?

It depends on the vertical. In crypto and VPN your own site can earn a meaningful share of citations, so it deserves attention. In casino almost all citations go to third-party pages, so reviews and roundups come first.

Conclusion: The Foundation of AI Visibility

AI systems build recommendations from a narrow set of sources, and each engine uses a different set. Media roundups drive most citations, own sites matter in some verticals and not in others, and Reddit and YouTube belong mostly to Google. A brand that does well in Google Search still has to check AI answers separately, because ranking and being cited are different things. Start with a small prompt set, find the pages that already shape your category’s answers and work with them to influence AI recommendations.
